Bruce's Story

Bruce Leon’s story is about resilience — finding strength in hardship and purpose in helping others.

Early Lessons in Resilience

Bruce’s mother taught him compassion and courage. When she died by suicide, he made a vow to remember her not for that moment, but for her full life — her warmth, curiosity, and strength. That experience shaped how he sees people: not by their worst day, but by their best potential.

Finding Faith Through Helping Others

During the Cold War, Bruce spent time in Finland helping Jewish families flee the Soviet Union and start new lives. Witnessing their courage and hope changed him — it showed what faith, freedom, and community can achieve when people stand together. That experience deepened his own connection to Judaism and inspired his lifelong commitment to helping others find safety, dignity, and belonging.

Building a Business With a Purpose

Bruce once walked away from a company that asked him to compromise his values. He vowed to build his own business differently — on integrity, fairness, and respect. What began as a small startup grew into a company that helped thousands of Chicago-area small businesses thrive. For Bruce, success means honoring the people who risk everything to build something of their own and make their communities stronger.

Giving Back

During the financial crisis, Bruce launched an interest-free loan fund that to this day helps families stay in their homes and small businesses survive. He’s continued mentoring local entrepreneurs and supporting philanthropic community projects that meet real needs. For Bruce, giving back isn’t about headlines — it’s about helping people stand back up so they can build stronger lives and stronger communities.

Family and Legacy

Family is at the center of Bruce’s life. He and his wife, Cheryl, raised four daughters who have each taken their own paths in life — a source of pride that reminds him how strength grows from individuality and shared values alike. Now a grandfather, Bruce sees his work through the lens of the next generation: creating a world where every family can build, believe, and belong. To honor the woman who first taught him compassion and courage, Bruce helped found a Chicago synagogue that bears his mother’s name — a living tribute to her spirit and to the community she inspired him to build.
