<h2 style="text-align: center;">Education Opportunity for Every Child</h2>Bruce believes education is the most powerful driver of opportunity in this country. Every child, regardless of family income, neighborhood, disability, or background, deserves access to a school where they feel safe, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential.That starts with&nbsp;strong public schools. Bruce supports fully funding public education, including meeting the federal commitment to special education under IDEA, investing in teachers and school staff, and ensuring schools have the resources they need to serve diverse student populations. Public schools are the backbone of our communities, and they must be equipped to succeed.But Bruce also believes honesty matters. When schools are not meeting the needs of students, families should not be told to wait, move, or accept failure.&nbsp;Opportunity should not depend on wealth or ZIP code.That is why Bruce supported Illinois’ Invest in Kids Act and supports Illinois’ participation in a federal version of that policy. Programs like Invest in Kids allow private donations to fund scholarships for low and middle income families, expanding access to high quality educational options without taking money away from public schools. For many families, especially those with children who need specialized environments, school choice is not ideology. It is necessity.Bruce rejects the false choice between supporting public education and expanding responsible school choice. A fair system does both. Programs meant to provide stability should not trap people in poverty, force unnecessary institutionalization, or bury families under red tape.Bruce supports&nbsp;protecting and strengthening disability and senior supports&nbsp;while modernizing them so they promote independence, dignity, and real access to care.That means&nbsp;modernizing income and healthcare supports&nbsp;so they actually work. Bruce supports updating outdated SSI asset limits that punish people for saving, streamlining application and appeals processes that can take years, and ensuring benefits reflect the real cost of living. Support programs should help people build stability, not force them to remain one emergency away from disaster.Bruce is a strong supporter of&nbsp;Home and Community Based Services, which allow people with disabilities and seniors to live independently in their homes and communities rather than being pushed into institutional care simply because it is the only option funded. He supports increasing HCBS funding, improving reimbursement rates so providers are available, and reducing waitlists that leave families in limbo for years.Across disability and senior programs, Bruce believes&nbsp;access matters as much as eligibility. Coverage on paper is meaningless if people cannot find a provider, therapist, or caregiver willing to accept it. That is why he supports improving reimbursement rates and reducing administrative barriers that keep services out of reach.Bruce’s approach is straightforward. Protect the safety net. Fix what is broken. Modernize programs so they uphold dignity, promote independence, and give people the stability they need to live full lives in their communities.

During the financial crisis, Bruce launched an interest-free loan fund that to this day helps families stay in their homes and small businesses survive. He’s continued mentoring local entrepreneurs and supporting philanthropic community projects that meet real needs. For Bruce, giving back isn’t about headlines — it’s about helping people stand back up so they can build stronger lives and stronger communities.

<h2 style="text-align: center;">A Social Safety Net That Promotes Dignity and Independence</h2>Bruce believes a strong social safety net is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of a serious society. Programs like SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, SSI, and Social Security are lifelines for children, older adults, people with disabilities, and families navigating crisis.Bruce supports&nbsp;protecting and strengthening these programs, while fixing the parts that do not work. A safety net should stabilize people in hard moments and help them regain their footing, not trap them in poverty or punish them with unnecessary bureaucracy.That means&nbsp;protecting access to food and healthcare&nbsp;and rejecting policies that push eligible people off benefits because of paperwork failures or unrealistic reporting requirements. Taking food off a child’s table or healthcare away from someone with a disability does not promote responsibility. Policies should encourage work, training, education, caregiving, or community service in ways that are clear, humane, and realistic. Bruce Leon affirms the right of Assyrians to remain, return, and thrive in their homeland across Iraq and Syria, as well as their right to autonomy in Assyria in northern Iraq.&nbsp;A region known asthe Assyrian Triangle—stretching east to west between the Tigris River and the Upper Zab, including the Nerwa and Rekan region, and north to south from the Iraq–Turkey border to where the Tigris and the Greater Zab meet—Assyrians have maintained a continuous presence for over 7,000 years.&nbsp;Before 2003, this region was home to an estimated 1.5 million Assyrians. Campaigning Our Way

Years ago, I met a family who was just weeks away from losing their home. They had fallen behind on payments after a medical crisis, and foreclosure was almost certain. They were good people who had worked hard all their lives, but like so many Americans, they had no cushion when life went sideways.I could not stand by and watch them lose everything they had built. So I created an interest free loan fund to help families in crisis stay in their homes. That family repaid every penny, and they still live in that same house today. Their children have grown up there, surrounded by friends, neighbors, and memories. Every time I drive past that street, I think about what that home means to them.Helping that family stay in their home was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. It reminded me that the American Dream is not about wealth or status. It is about stability, belonging, and the dignity that comes from hard work. Had they been forced into foreclosure, they would have lost more than a house. They would have lost their footing, their community, and a sense of hope.That experience changed how I think about housing. I learned that most people do not need a handout. They just need a fair chance and a little breathing room to get back on their feet. But I also learned that for many families in underprivileged communities, the playing field is not level to begin with. Decades of disinvestment, red tape, and poor infrastructure have made it harder for people in those neighborhoods to buy homes, repair the ones they have, or even find safe and affordable rental options.I believe we can change that. We can direct more resources to neighborhoods that have been left behind and make sure federal and state housing programs actually reach the families who need them most. That means supporting small builders, empowering community development organizations, and cutting through the bureaucracy that too often stalls local revitalization efforts.Here are some ideas I believe can make a real difference:<ul><li>Streamlining permits and approvals for smaller housing developments near jobs and transit</li><li>Encouraging the reuse of vacant commercial buildings for housing</li><li>Making it easier for homeowners to add in law units or coach houses</li><li>Expanding access to low interest financing for workforce and starter homes</li><li>Rewarding communities that adopt smart zoning reforms instead of punishing those that do not</li><li>Prioritizing investment and home repair programs in historically underfunded neighborhoods</li></ul>I believe the federal government should work with communities, not dictate to them. Washington can offer incentives and support for good local policy, but the real solutions will come from people who know their neighborhoods best.Owning a home, raising a family, and building a future should not be out of reach for anyone willing to work for it. With practical reforms and a renewed sense of community, we can keep families in their homes, strengthen underprivileged neighborhoods, and preserve the promise of the American Dream.

Housing That Works: Keeping the American Dream Within Reach

EVANSTON, IL —&nbsp;Northwestern University has reached a&nbsp;<a href="https://action.bruceleonforcongress.com/r?u=v-LgzBXvrYt9qjI8RVBN-9LHT1TdQ9c4R7CZ8bKNLk_hSQGtlDSZ3-mjppny1PEL4LThObdMvDKwiGKWtsXpRBzfxsDOcDpHYi5wKxi_EFQT6yrVUr4k6BCO-FA4bbJW&amp;e=2dbec0cb1ec2b289999a4060c5c19e6c&amp;utm_source=bruceleonforcongress&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=release_northwestern_decision&amp;n=1&amp;test_email=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">seventy five million dollar settlement</a>&nbsp;with the United States Department of Justice after serious incidents on campus created a hostile environment for Jewish students. Reports of harassment, intimidation, blocked access to campus spaces, and aggressive protest activity triggered a federal civil rights investigation.The settlement restores frozen federal funding and requires Northwestern to adopt stronger protections against discrimination, including mandatory antisemitism training for all students, faculty, and staff.Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss responded to the agreement by denouncing the settlement and dismissing the federal investigation as political.
